Transportation:
Flight to Iceland- $284.90
Rental Car- $124.42
Gas- $30.37
We were lucky enough to get a pretty good deal on our flights into Iceland and decided to get a rental car so we would have more freedom to see the sights. I'd highly recommend getting a car unless you plan to spend your trip hopping on and off tour buses. We were able to plan our own route/schedule and get pictures without a hundred people in the background. The only con is that the weather and roads are not ideal so a confident driver is a must.
Accommodation:
Four nights with hosts- $0
One night in a hotel during our road trip around ring road to see geysers, waterfalls, and beaches- $51.99
Staying with hosts was incredible for our experience and our wallets. I learned so much from living with genuine Icelanders for a week (more here).
Entertainment:
Tip for Reykjavik tour guide (I actually tipped him with a twenty pound note I had and didn't feel like exchanging myself)- $28
Admission to a salsa dance- $4.4
We mostly got out into nature, wandered the city, and went dancing with our hosts for entertainment. We skipped the most touristy things (like the Blue Lagoon) in favor of more authentic pastimes (natural hot springs) and kept costs low.
Food:
Meals with MM- $43.07
Meals with our hosts (Heimir and Johanna)- $19.18
Groceries/Snacks- $27.69
Food is super expensive in Iceland because it's both hard to grow and hard to import. We mostly stuck to making breakfasts and packing lunches while opting for less-expensive restaurants the few times we did eat out. Having access to a kitchen to make breakfast burritos and store sandwich supplies was crucial. On our last night, Heimir and I went grocery shopping and picked up supplies for a family goodbye dinner of whale and salad. When in Iceland.
Total: $607.61
Six hundred dollars for six days was definitely not ideal, but that included the initial flight into Europe and happened to take place in the most expensive destination on the itinerary. It was a big blow to the budget but I feel good about the value we got from each experience.
Next up: Amsterdam
